The future of the airline industry involves expensive,
highly-efficient, Next Generation airplanes that are totally dependent on computers and avionics.  In new airplanes with price tags of up to $360 million dollars, two-thirds of the cost can be for avionics and computer systems.
To keep Next Generation commercial airplanes flying, airlines will need large numbers of properly trained, licensed technicians.  The 2016 Boeing Pilot and Technician Outlook Forecast states that there is an "extraordinary demand" for 679,000 maintenance technicians during the next 20 years -- with emphasis on China and the Asia-Pacific region.
